At a high level, it broke down a typical CIO’s constituents into four groups and recommended optimal allocation of time among those groups, as follows:

When viewed this way, how does your allocation of time compare? How do you spend your day? If you are not a CIO, does the level of attention you get from yours match up to this?

Other things I’d love to know:

  • How does this allocation change over the tenure of a CIO? Are seasoned CIOs more able to “manage up” than new ones?
  • How would this look if shown by type of activity (categories such as management, operations, innovation, crisis)?
  • How many CIOs come anywhere near the recommended 10% of time to be used for one’s own restoration and perspective?

I expect to learn more about these topics at the CIO Symposium on May 17. Please let me know if you plan on attending!
